Celebrations in Lockdown and Rhyming Words

My family celebrated our first holiday in lockdown this week. For a group of people who look for any excuse to get together, this was tough. As it was for many families across the world (for so many reasons).

For us, celebrations mean food… lots of it. And part of the magic of any season is spending time in the kitchen with my mom, swapping stories, laughing, and wondering why the recipes never come out the same as the year before.

Food and family stories go hand in hand with us right along with aging recipe cards covered in splatters from a thousand years of use. We don’t often look at the recipes (which is probably why the food comes out slightly different every time…) but the card sits on the counter, more reminder of our history than guide for our current meal.

This year, Baby Girl and I tackled some of those recipes without my mom. It was a beautiful moment between mom and daughter as I shared stories of when I made the same recipe with my mom at her age, but it was missing something.

Because across town, my mom was making the same recipe alone in her kitchen.

Sure, we video chatted.

We took pictures.

But it wasn’t the same.

Later, we’ll celebrate with a video conference call, our first ever as a family. And while our tables won’t be filled with our traditional shared recipes, our hearts will be filled with the (virtual) presence of our loved ones.

In honor of the new magic of this season, and the fun Baby Girl and I had dyeing eggs this year, we bring you one of her favorite new activities: rhyming words.

Rhyming Words Egg Sort

This pack is an easy-to-use, low prep activity to do while you’re stuck inside. It includes six rhyming word cut-and-paste egg sorts to get students thinking about those ending sounds.

Each page has eight words to cut apart and sort. (Bonus points for sharpening the kiddos’ fine motor skills as well!)

So, if you’re looking for something to do, or a way to strengthen those rhyming skills, I hope this pack helps!
